Anabel Barnston

ABOUT

Anabel is a Writer-Director from London with a love for genre-bending work with a comedy edge.

She trained at Metfilm School, graduating with a Master's in Directing.

Coming from a comedy acting background, her work frequently has both a comedic and tragic edge, pursuing narratives that tread the line between the two, whether that be in short films or music videos. She thoroughly enjoys working together with actors, creating a safe space for inhibition and silliness.

Her directorial and script writing debut short, The Ditch was selected for BAFTA qualifying, London Short Film Festival. The Ditch subsequently toured the UK in the festival’s New Shorts: IRL curation.

Anabel’s second short, Contraband, (written and directed by), went on to screen at numerous festivals including BAFTA qualifying, Norwich Film Festival, World of Film International Festival Glasgow, also winning Best Direction at Female Feedback Film Festival.

Anabel has since set up Production Company, Squish Films; producing and directing music videos for artists such as Phoebe Coco (BBC 6 music), Dolly Doops (BBC Introducing) and ska band, Imperial Leisure.

Recently, she has enjoyed working beyond the realms of reality with short, Robot Lady; an absurdist comedy exploring the pressures around motherhood and the decision not to have children.

As a Director’s UK member, Anabel has been selected for their latest Inspire mentorship scheme with mentor Laura Scrivano (Lazarus Project, Wedding Season, Hannah). Anabel intends to absorb as much learning and experience from Laura as possible!
